The College of Veterinary Medicine was established by an act of the Tennessee Legislature in 1974. The College is part of the University of Tennessee statewide system and is located on the Agricultural Campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

UTCVM is one of only 30 veterinary colleges in the nation, providing opportunities for Tennessee students, while serving pet owners and the livestock industry as well as protecting public health, enhancing medical knowledge and generating economic benefits to the state and nation.

Mission, V​​ision, and Values​

Medical Services

  • Providing veterinary specialists to private practitioners and citizens
  • Educating specialists to meet tomorrow's needs
  • Advancing medical and surgical knowledge

Community Services

  • Helping K-12 students and nursing home and rehabilitation patients through animal-assisted therapy
  • Assisting Tennessee animal shelters to reduce pet overpopulation
  • Focusing on the relationship between domestic violence and animal abuse

Public Health

  • Educating tomorrow's veterinary public health professionals
  • Training the nation's agricultural industry to improve food safety and security
  • Preventing spread of disease between animals and people

Healthy Herds

  • Improving Tennessee's animal agriculture economy
  • Teaching herd health management skills to future veterinarians

Research Benefits

  • Studying dietary compounds that contribute to prevention of cancer in humans
  • Investigating obesity and diabetes to help companion animals and people
  • Developing ways to slow Alzheimer's disease in its early stages by changing the direction of drug treatments
