Murray Marks, MS, PhD
Dr. Murray Marks is an associate professor in the Department of Pathology in the Graduate School of Medicine. He earned his master's degree in Biological Anthropology from the University of Arkansas and his PhD in Anthropology under the tutelage of Dr. William Bass at the University of Tennessee. His research interests lie in mineralized tissue biology and histology, dental enamel histopathology, skeletal trauma histology, fetal dental development, and human identification/forensic anthropology. Dr. Marks was instrumental in helping launch the first forensic dentistry fellowship program at the UT Graduate School of Medicine in 2014.
Mike Tabor, DDS
Dr. Mike Tabor is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of
General Dentistry in the Graduate School of Medicine. He has practiced clinical dentistry in the Nashville area since 1975. In addition, Dr. Tabor has served as the chief forensic odontologist for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner
for Tennessee since 1985 and is past
president and diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Odontology. He is
section chair of the American Academy of Forensic Science and co-authored a chapter in the textbook Forensic Odontology. Dr. Tabor is a much sought-after speaker to professional and civic groups about his experiences while assisting the New York Medical Examiner's Office in identifying the bodies from the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001. He also
recently published two forensic works based on forensic case files: Out of the Darkness and Walk of Death.
Richard Weems, DMD, MS
Dr. Richard Weems is a clinical associate professor in the Department of General Dentistry in the Graduate School of Medicine. Dr. Weems recently retired as an associate professor of dental radiology at the University of Alabama, Birmingham (UAB), where he was the director of the Maxillofacial Imaging Center. He is the immediate past president of the American Society of Forensic Odontology. Dr. Weems earned his DMD from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry (UAB) and thereafter served in the U.S. Army Dental Corps, where he received the Army Commendation Medal. After a short stint in private practice, he returned to the UAB School of Dentistry and earned a master’s degree in Dental Radiology. Dr. Weems has been a dental consultant to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences since 1987 and was deployed to the World Trade Center disaster in September 2001 as part of the National Mass Disaster Response Team (DMORT). He has investigated over 250 cases involving criminal human bite mark analysis and victim identification through dental remains resulting from homicide and accidental death. Dr. Weems is now the Region IV Dental Section Leader of DMORT and was deployed to aid in victim identification after hurricanes Katrina and Ike. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Odontology (ABFO). Dr. Weems has made numerous invited presentations and has published several chapters in textbooks relating to dental radiology and forensic odontology; he co-edited the recently published 5th edition of the ASFO Manual of Forensic Odontology.
