Horse being prepped for a specialized surgery

The Equine Surgery Service at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center consists of a dedicated team of professionals including veterinarians who are board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgery (ACVS), veterinary residents in an advanced surgical specialists training program, certified veterinary technicians, animal caretakers and 4th year veterinary students.

The surgical unit contains four separate surgical suites: standing surgery, soft tissue surgery, orthopedic surgery, and abdominal/gastrointestinal surgery. These extensive facilities allow for the separation of surgery cases into dedicated rooms. Dedicated rooms facilitate premium surgery for highly specialized procedures such as orthopedic cases and upper airway surgery, and abdominal surgeries. The large standing surgery area supports minimally invasive surgical procedures in one dedicated room. The surgery rooms are complimented by dedicated induction and recovery rooms. These facilities allow for induction and recovery of horses from anesthesia under the safest possible conditions. These rooms will provide better support in the management of those cases in a controlled environment.

Equine surgical evaluations include:

  • muscle, bone and joint disorders
  • acute abdominal pain ("colic")
  • reproductive disorders
  • dental and airway diseases
  • lacerations and wounds

Our specialists and residents carefully evaluate patients in order to reach an accurate diagnosis and determine the best approach to treat your horse's problem.
